Alberta Jobs Continue to Attract Canadian Migrants

Interprovincial Migrants Rapidly Increasing Alberta's PopulationMap of Canada

Alberta’s fast rate of population growth has continued to keep up the pace as many from other parts of Canada are moving to the province in search of jobs.

In just three months – from April to June of 2014 – the western Canadian province had a net gain of 13,204 interprovincial migrants. Net gain is calculated by subtracting the amount of people who left the province from those that have arrived.

To put things into perspective, that’s like adding another municipality the size of Brooks, AB, to the provinces total population which is astounding!

It also happens that amount of interprovincial growth was the highest recorded since 2006, a time when Alberta was undergoing an economic boom similar to the one it is today.

More Factors

While interprovincial migration continues to be a main source of population growth for Alberta, so has international migration and natural population growth.

Statistics Canada’s preliminary estimates find that the province had approximately 56,582 births in 2013/2014, starting from July 1st to June 30th.

Fastest Growing Provinces

In comparison to last year, Alberta’s total population has grown by 2.8 percent to 4,121,692 thus far. It remains the fastest growing province in Canada.

The two runners up are Saskatchewan at 1.7 percent and Manitoba at 1.3 percent. The national provincial average for growth rate sits at 1.1 percent.

Over the past two years, approximately 77,000 people have migrated from other provinces to Alberta in search of a job and essentially a new quality of life.

With a consistently strong economy and no end in sight, it is definite that Alberta will continue to attract more migrants from Canada and the world in the years ahead. If future rates increase or decrease from what they are now is still yet to be seen.
