According to Statistics Canada, Alberta's population will experience yet even more population growth than it already has in months ahead.

Analysis of six possible growth situations for Alberta shows its population could increase by anywhere from 5.6 million to 6.8 million by the year 2038.

For the highest growth scenario, it basically it means that the current population in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer would all be duplicated and then combined with growth in other rural areas to make the nearly 7 million increase.

Currently Alberta is home to about 4.1 million people, making it the 4th most populated province in Canada. That statistic itself is also predicted to change with Alberta overtaking British Columbia as 3rd most populated province by 2038.

Statistics Canada also projected that Alberta would be likely to lead all Canadian provinces in population growth over the next 25 years and should experience the "high" end of the six plausible scenarios.

They also note that these are projections, and not forecasts, where projections attempt to establish a very possible, and likely situation for the long-term while forecasts only suggest what is possible.

It is also projected that Canada as a whole will experience its own substantial population growth over the next 25 years.

Statistics Canada used the same six possible growth situations and found low / high scenarios of 39.4 and 47.8 million. An even more lengthy analysis shows that Canada could reach a whopping 63.5 million people by 2063.

Factors

While economic trends may affect a person's choice to move to Alberta in the years ahead and become a part of predicted population growth in the process, it's not a factor considered by Statistics Canada.

What is taken into account is migration rates, fertility trends and life expectancy. The first of these three factors is closely related to Alberta's economic performance as consistent employment growth, high income levels and an overall strong job market has continued to draw migrants from all over Canada and the world.
