    Atlanta Flames to Calgary Flames

Atlanta Flames Calgary Flames Fact #22

    Calgaryism Fact #22

The Calgary Flames originally played in the city of Atlanta from 1972 to 1980, when and where they were known as the Atlanta Flames.

From 1972 to 1980 the Atlanta Flames missed the playoffs twice. The 6 times they did make it, they were eliminated in the first round.

During the 1979 – 1980 season the Atlanta Flames were struggling to draw fans to their games. So much in fact that they were sold and relocated to Calgary where they became the Flames that we know today!

Calgary was only one of the three rumored destinations for the Atlanta Flames. Also on the list were Dallas and Houston.

On May 21st, 1980, the Atlanta Flames were sold for $16 million to the highest bidder. It was the most expensive purchase for a National Hockey League team ever made at the time!

Today, the Calgary Flames recognize the place they originated from by wearing a flaming A on their assistant captain jerseys that represents the Atlanta Flames. Go Flames Go!
