The time has come for us all to remember the sacrifice made by our fellow Canadians who gave their lives fighting for our country and its allies.

This coming Friday – November 11th, 2016 – we invite you to take a step back to both honour and remember those who made that incredible sacrifice for us today, and to show respect to those who survived and lived on to share their inspiring stores of grit, courage and strength.

One of the best ways we can take a moment to honour all those who have given so much for us is to participate in any one of these most popular Calgary Remembrance Day events 2016.

Aerospace Museum CeremonyMemorial Drive Calgary - Poppy Lest We Forget

The Aerospace Museum of Calgary believes in the importance of remembering the sacrifice that the fallen have made for ourselves and our country and is looking forward to gather the community for Remembrance Day 2016.

If the weather permits, the museum plans on having its ceremony outside this year on the old BCATP parade square, so remember to dress accordingly.

The ceremony will begin at 10:25am and if indoors there will be limited seating, so its recommended that you arrive early to get a good parking spot.

After 4:00pm, the museum will be offering admission for a donation in the amount of your choice as tribute to Canada’s war heroes.

Battalion Park Ceremony

  • Address – Battalion Park, 3001 Signal Hill Dr. SW
  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 10:30am to 12:00pm

Join the Kings Own Calgary Regiment for Remembrance Day 2016 at Battalion Park in southwest Calgary.

This year’s ceremony will include public addresses and speeches alongside a wreath laying and short ceremony performed by Canada’s own military.

Canadian Pacific Ceremony

  • Address – 7550 Ogden Dale Road SE
  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 10:30am

Did you know that more than 33,000 Canadian Pacific employees served in the First and Second World Wars?

Canadian Pacific pays tribute to those men through its annual Remembrance Day ceremony, this year being health at CP’s Memorial Square which was built to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the beginning of World War I.

Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony; you’ll also see members of the Calgary Police Service, company executives and pensioners and military representatives in attendance. A moment of silence will be observed at 11:00am.

Fort CalgaryHistory of Calgary - Fort Calgary

  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 10:30am

Fort Calgary has its very own Remembrance Day service starting at 10:30am on the 11th.

If you stick around for a little while after the service, you’ll get to enjoy browsing the wares of the artisan fair happening immediately after the ceremony, starting at 11:30am and ending at 5:00pm.

Admission to the artisan fair is free with a donation of a non-perishable food item to the Veteran’s Food Bank.

Central Memorial Park

  • Address – 1221 2nd Street SW
  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 10:30am to 12:30pm

Central Memorial Park’s annual Remembrance Day memorial includes the Calgary Highlanders Parade, between 4th Street SW and 12 and 13th Avenue SW.

It will be held around the centre of Central Memorial Park near the Cenotaph (empty tomb or monument erected to honour the fallen).

This event is great for those living in downtown and the beltline areas to check out. The parade really is top-notch!

Field of Crosses

  • Address – Memorial Drive between Centre Street & 3rd Street NW
  • Date – November 1st to November 11th, 2016

You may have noticed the countless number of white crosses on the north side of Memorial Drive between Centre and 3rd Street NW.

At sunrise on every morning between November 1st and 11th, there is a flag-raising ceremony at this memorial which includes a piper and bugler. At sunset, the flags are lowered in honour of the fallen.

Each one of these 3000 crosses are inscribed with the name, age, rank, regiment, date of death of a Southern Albertan solider who was killed in action.

It’s an overwhelming feeling walking amid the crosses and seeing the inscriptions on each that gives you an up close and personal Remembrance Day experience.

After the Military Museums Remembrance Day service, it will open its doors and give free admission to all who choose to visit for the remainder of the day.

Inside you’ll find several displays as well as heaps of information on the role that we had to play in some of our history’s most fierce wars. Also see Calgary’s Best Museums here.

This service has been quite popular over the years, so make sure to dress for the weather and arrive early as parking spaces are limited.

Peace Park

  • Address – Peace Park, 2nd Avenue & 8th Street SW
  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 12:30pm to 2:30pm

Peace Park’s sandstone arch was originally part of the Strathcona Building, an office block in Calgary that was constructed between 1939 and 1945.

Over the years, it was turned into a war memorial for those Canadians who fought and died in the First World War, Second World War and Korean War.

This sandstone arch is where you’ll find Peace Park’s Remembrance Day event which includes sharing stories and discussion about the importance of the peace-building.

Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

  • Address – 1415 14th Avenue NW
  • Date – November 11th, 2016, 9:30am doors, 10:30am ceremony

Every year the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium puts on its own Remembrance Day memorial. Weather permitting, there will be a march past the building immediately after the indoor ceremonies.

Wreaths will also be laid by civic, community, political, military and veterans organizations. If you’d like to lay your own wreath during the ceremony you are also welcome to.

The auditorium fills up quick and so does parking stalls so make sure to arrive early!
