Big Catch Sushi Bar Japanese Restaurant Review
Google reviews are a good way to find new restaurants to try. That's how we found Big Catch Sushi on Macleod Trail SW with its extremely high rating (4.8 out of 5) with hundreds of votes (275).
We were extremely pleased with this new sushi restaurant of ours and would suggest you try it out the next time you're in for something else than your usual favourite sushi spot. It's without a doubt a BIG catch, and one of the Best Sushi Restaurants in Calgary.

Located at 8835 MacLeod Trail SW, Big Catch Sushi Bar's new strip mall complex provides a fresh new look for this new Japanese restaurant in Calgary.
It's conveniently located for all south / some southwest residents to reach and is good for city centre / inner city residents as well as it is about 5 minutes south from Chinook Centre.
Atmosphere & Service
Inside Big Catch Sushi Bar you'll find a clean, contemporary atmosphere with light wood trim and comfortable half booths / tables throughout. Bathrooms are clean and the open kitchen adds a nice touch to the ambiance with greetings and goodbyes in Japanese from the kitchen staff.
Our server was extremely helpful in explaining the menu and keeping our glasses filled. Actually, we were helped by two servers during our stay, so much in fact that we were asked how everything was almost too often, but not quite.
One outstanding part of our service however was when we were leaving. Our server opened the front door for us on the way out. It was a very nice gesture and we were surprised!
Our Food
Vegetable Tempura - $9.25 - Zuchinni, red bell pepper, yam
Lightly battered and fried, this tempura was the perfect light appetizer to satisfy the "hangryness" happening at the table, if you know what I mean.
Assorted Sashimi - $18.75 - 3-piece salmon, 3-piece red tuna, 3-piece white tuna
Big Catch Sushi Bar's sashimi slices are pretty well sized and fresh to taste, not to mention they come out on an epic glass conch shell.
Both the salmon and white tuna were melt-in-your-mouth quality cuts full of flavour while the red tuna wasn't as soft but had a stronger taste.
Overall we really enjoyed the sashimi cuts and would recommend you getting some also if raw fish is your thing.
Jupiter Rain - Kyoto style sushi roll - $14.75 - Avocado, red bell pepper, serano peppers topped with yuzu-beet pearls and saikyo-miso marinated torch-seared salmon
Finding Kyoto style sushi in Calgary is a treat. Of the two we indulgently ordered, the Jupiter Rain was our favourite.
It had a more diverse array of ingredients: the avocado's soft taste combined seamlessly with the sweetness beet pearls, crunchiness of the red bell pepper and freshness of the torch-seared salmon.
Overall, we recommend the Jupiter Rain to you when visiting Big Catch Sushi Bar!
Autumn Haze - Kyoto style sushi rool - $14.75 - Sweet-mirin glazed torch seared salmon-toro topped with mizore-radish
Autumn Haze, in all its simplicity, is a kyoto style sushi roll best for picky eaters.
It lacks the diversity of textures and tastes that the Jupiter Rain (above) had, and was just a bit too simple for our liking.
Also, the mirin or radish (not sure which one) gave it somewhat of a floral taste. It seemed as if we were just eating blocks of rice.
If the rest of the food weren't so good, this sushi roll would have affected our food rating for the restaurant.
Meteor Rain - $13.75 - crab and wild salmon topped with torch seared salmon, thin-sliced onion, Japanese mayo and mixed spice
Meteor Rain was by far our favourite sushi roll at Big Catch Sushi Bar. Each bite you're getting a good amount of fresh and savoury fish (you should be able to taste the fish well enough when eating sushi) with onion and mayo accents on the way down.
Our server mentioned that Meteor Rain is one of the most popular rolls at Big Catch Sushi Bar. We recommend it to you, like he would!
Final Word...
Overall, we really enjoyed our dining experience at Big Catch Sushi Bar and would go back without a doubt. We really loved the Kyoto style sushi as we've only had this in Vancouver before. It's a first for us in Calgary.
The service was also impeccable. With multiple servers, you're sure to have your drinks topped and anything else you need so you can focus on the conversation at the table. We recommend you check this place out!
