The Mayor’s Urban Design Awards (MUDA) are a biennial event that recognize the contributions that architects, artists and designers have made to the overall livability of the City of Calgary.
These are projects of exceptional quality and design in buildings, urban spaces and streetscapes which also help to set the bar for future municipal planning. In 2017, East Village was honored to be the recipient of five awards including another special reward. Let’s begin with the 6 MUDA category recipients!
St. Louis Hotel – Mawsom Urban Design Award
The St. Louis Hotelwon the Mawsom Urban Design Award for its achievement in excellent urban design and creativity.
Today, the hotel has been fully restored and hosts 12,000 square feet of office space occupied by the CMLC responsible for management and construction of the New Central Library.
Once the NCL is completed, the hotel will be converted to retail space.
Crossroads Garden Shed – Urban Fragments
Why have a regular looking garden shed when you can have one that transcends the boundary of plain and into the dimension of art?
This public art installation / storage shed is made from Cor-ten steel shipping containers and features corrugated geometries and expanded metal meshes.
New Central Library – Great City, Great Design
The New Central Library is set to be one of the most unique-looking buildings not just in East Village, but the entire City of Calgary.
Dialog and SNOHETTA, the two architecture firms awarded the project, have made an incredible design for the NCL inside and out.
This key amenity of EV is set to open its doors in late 2018.

C Square – Civic Design Projects
Located on the edge of East Village, this award-winning project serves as both a gathering space and gateway to the up-and-coming downtown neighbourhood.
You may recognize this project from its wooden finishings and cool metal airplane-wing like lights that line the northeast C-Train line heading out of East Village.
Studio Bell – People’s Choice
Studio Bell, home of the new National Music Centre, has had its doors open since July 2016 and been met with raving reviews from locals and visitors from abroad.
The 160,000 square foot facility is home to a 300 seat performance hall, five floors of exhibits, 3 Canadian Music Hall of Fames and more.
It’s no wonder this exciting public facility was the People’s Choice.
