Wild Rose Brewery: Beer, Food and Tours at this Hidden Gem Calgary Hidden Gems Wild Rose Brewery

Have you heard of the Wild Rose Brewery in Currie Barracks? I just happened to stumble onto this Calgary hidden gem just a few weeks ago and am still relishing in the savoury taste of its food and drink.

At first I was a little bit taken back by the amount of people inside, thinking we would have to wait for an hour before being seated. The cashier must have noticed the antsy look on our faces and quickly explained to us that the majority of people were going on a tour of the brewery. What brewery?

To my surprise I looked in the direction she was pointing and saw the beginning of what looked like a massive… brewery, hence the Wild Rose Brewery.

I guess I was distracted by the really cool wall decorations all around us, especially the chandelier made out of electrical lights traditionally used by mechanics. There even was an antique map of all the beer breweries in the United States. I never knew they made maps for such things!

First impressions of the Wild Rose Brewery & Pub were all pointing towards one thing… that this is a Calgary hidden gem definitely worth visiting.

Read on for more about our yummy food and drink, as well as tour opportunities at the Wild Rose Brewery & Pub in Currie Barracks.

    Where to Find It

    Food and Drink

Many people come to the Wild Rose Brewery for some fresh draft. I don’t blame them.

I discovered a delicious light, orange-flavoured beer called Velvet Fog, took out my cell phone and actually wrote down its name for future reference – it was that good!

Give it a try the next time you’re out at your local pub, or perhaps at one of the best beer halls in Calgary.

Apart from the pub-style cashier where you can buy drinks, there is also a menu with a mix of home and pub style cuisines. After a quick glance we put our orders in and sat down at a table that conveniently just opened up.

Bangers and Mash - $13.95 – two of Old Country Sausage Shop’s free-range sausages served with braised red cabbage, smoky bacon mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy.

All of you who have Eastern European heritage are probably watering at the mouth right now. I have had many sausage potato and cabbage dishes in my day (my grandmother is Ukrainian) and the bangers and mash couldn’t have replicated that favourite home-style meal any better.

The sausages, soft, juicy and full of flavour, but the real hook on this dish was the purple cabbage with its addictive sweet taste that went perfectly with a bit of sausage and mashed potatoes at the same time.

Wash it all down with a smooth Velvet Fog and you are good to go!

    Home-Made Food

While waiting for our food and drink to come out, we saw several other dishes come out to other pub patrons and were immediately envious. It was almost as if we were kids in a candy store, curious as to what that that appealing looking, never seen before candy tasted like.

Simply put, the food looked so appetizing that I will be back to try several other dishes at this Calgary hidden gem - that’s a for sure thing. I will also be back to take a tour of the massive brewery one of these days…
