Canada Holds the Record for Most Gold Medals Received at the Winter Olympics!Canada Gold Medal Olympic Record Holder Infographic Calgaryism

Did you know that Canada holds the record for the most gold medals received by a nation at the Winter Olympics? Canada managed to break the previous record on its own turf at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games held in Vancouver, British Columbia with a total of 14 gold medals!

Ironically enough, the previous record was held by the host of the world event this year… the former Soviet Union who claimed 13 gold medals in 1976. Tied with modern day Russia was Norway who also managed to claim 13 gold’s in 2002.

    Sochi Winter Olympic Games

So, how is Canada expected to do in this year’s Winter Olympics? If Vancouver 2010 was any indicator of what success Canada will have at Sochi 2014, then there is much to be excited about!

As a matter of fact, Canada has high hopes with goals of beating out their previous record of 14.

Some of Canada’s gold medal favourites for speed skating such as Cindy Klassen (5 medals in Italy 2006), Kristina Groves (retired), and Clara Hughes (retired) aren’t competing in Sochi 2014; however, those who are returning as reigning champions are looking to keep their titles and the whole of Canada is behind them.
