Muku Japanese Ramen Calgary Restaurant ReviewMuku Calgary Restaurant Review Japanese

Places like Muku Japanese Ramen are always a great go-to spot when looking for an affordable and authentic Asian cuisine meal.

Despite the early criticism that the restaurant experienced when it opened in 2011, it now has climbed the ranks of Urbanspoon with an impressive overall satisfaction rating of 85 percent.

Here’s our latest experience at Muku Japanese Ramen located in the Kensington / Hillhurst area of NW Calgary.

  • Atmosphere – 6.5/10.0
  • Service – 8.0/10.0
  • Food – 8.5/10.0
  • Cost – 9.0/10.0

Atmosphere and Service

What Muku lacks in size is well made up for in its speedy and exemplary service.

In less than 10 minutes my order was placed in front of me and throughout the enjoyment of my food my beverages (water, ginger-ale) were topped up without having to ask – two signs of great service in my books.

One downside to the small interior is that because of the restaurants popularity it can become quite packed during lunch and dinner rush hour.

Another thing to consider is that the entrance is rather close to some of the tables so if you plan on dining at Muku during winter you might want to request one furthest away.

Muku’s menu selections include a variety of dry rice bowls, wet ramen soups and other Japanese delicacies, all of which sounded wonderful.

However, we both ended up ordering what seemed to be a staple on Muku’s menu as three people sitting at two adjacent tables were also were eating the dish (as our server pointed out to us). We figured it must be good!

Miso Ramen - $12.95 – corn, green onion, bean sprouts, diced carrots, dried seaweed, egg noodles, and three slices of chashu (pork) in miso broth

I highly recommend the Miso Ramen If you’re looking to try authentic Japanese ramen noodles for the first time.

The soft and tasty ramen noodles combine well with the miso broth that isn’t too sweet, as well as the different flavours of the ingredients mentioned above.

The highlight of this dish was the succulent chashu, sliced and marinated braised pork-belly that I would definitely add a double portion of to the dish for an extra cost the next time around.

All in all, Muku Japanese Ramen is a great restaurant to check out in the Kensington area if you are looking to try something new at an affordable price.
