5 Things I Love About Fort McMurray Alberta
Fort McMurray is a place in northern Alberta, approximately 4 to 5 hours north of Edmonton. A little while ago, I decided I would take a tour of the city myself. Here are my 5 favourite things about Fort McMurray!
1 - Diversity – Fort McMurray is a diverse city made up of approximately half Albertans, and the rest from other parts of Canada and the world. Find five different First Nations, Somali Canadian’s, Middle Eastern, Chinese and more ethnicities all living as one in Fort McMurray. And if this doesn’t have you convinced, then maybe the 147 different languages spoken in its school systems will!
2 - Macdonald Island – Canada’s largest leisure, recreational and social centre! Located in the heart of Fort McMurray, Macdonald Island is an outdoor and indoor facility consisting of the Syncrude Aquatic Centre, Suncor Community Leisure Centre and Miskanaw Golf Club. Macdonald Park offers a multitude of activities and events, and is undergoing a massive renovation to include even more of such. Expect to see these additions:
- Badminton Courts
- Tournament Centre
- Outdoor Concert Area
- Community Pavilion
- Turf Field
- Expansion of Golf, Wellness and Fitness Areas
- New Restaurant
- And more...
3 - Mitchells Cafe & Gifts – You never know what kind of food you’ll end up with when traveling. In Fort McMurray, I visited Mitchells Cafe & Gifts and was absolutely delighted with the quality of food and drink. With a large selection of fresh sandwiches, baked goods, salads, soups and more, it’s hard to go wrong when eating at Mitchells.
4 - Culture – Fort McMurray hosts a slew of different entertainment and arts. Whether it is golf you are looking for, a fine dining experience or a relaxing evening at the movies, Fort McMurray has it all. There is a huge local music scene as well, proven by the existence of Campbell Music, the only real music store found north of Edmonton! When I was in Fort McMurray, I had a strong sense I was amidst a teeming local culture with music being one of its strongest contributors.
5 - The People – I found that everywhere I went, people were very friendly and did their best to help guide me as to what the best local attractions and events were, as well as directions. The people in any travel destination can sometimes make or break your trip, and in this instance the people of Fort McMurray definitely made it as enjoyable as possible!
Now that I’ve shared with you some of my favorite things about Fort McMurray, please feel free to let me know what yours are!
