There’s a new rising star on Calgary’s foodie scene that we’ve heard a handful of foodie friends rant about. So we decided to check out The Block Kitchen & Lounge for ourselves, and boy oh boy, did the raving reviews sure live up to what they said!

We all have our favourite restaurants. You know, the ones we go to over and over, ordering the same dish or two again and again. But hey, next time you’re in for some new food, I highly recommend you check out The Block!

Atmosphere & Service

One thing you’ll immediately notice about The Block is that its outdated exterior (building it is situated in) sure doesn’t match its homey and comfy cabin-like interior. The highlight of the inside, a massive wooden barn door (I am guessing) that makes you feel like you’re dining in Banff.

Besides the wooden accents, the teal green walls, neat light fixtures and indoor panel windows will gain your attention, well, for a few minutes anyway.

Apart from the aesthetics, our service was incredible throughout our meal. Drinks were filled and the server helped guide us towards choosing an entrée by romancing the food to a point where one of us just had to take up her suggestion on the steak sandwich and beef barley soup lunch combo.

Our Food

Block BLTA - $16.00 – seared house cured pork belly, fresh tomato, avocado, arugula, garlic aioli, comes with side of choice.

Whether you’re a fan of pork or not, you’ll love this sandwich! The pork belly departs from your typical pork meat with bits of tender gristle that make for a much juicier (and tastier) piece of pork. Avocado and arugula top off this sandwich with perfection!

Steak sandwich - $18.00 – marinated flat iron, toasted French bread, smoked peppercorn aioli, arugula, comes with side of choice.

An impeccable lunch combo, one of the best steak sandwiches I’ve had with the meat done just right (medium rare). Crunchy bread and a sweet aioli makes this a must-try at The Block.

All in all, The Block Kitchen & Lounge is one northwest Calgary restaurant I will be back at in a jiffy. I highly recommend checking it out for yourself!
