Borgo Trattoria Calgary Restaurant Review

When I was younger, it was important for my family to sit down for dinner every night, with no TV allowed in the background or no phones on the table. By removing these distractions, we could focus on the meal and the conversation. In this fast paced world, it is seemingly more difficult to find time to eat – let alone cook. Fast food is all about convenience. Convenience leads to unhealthy food options. Unhealthy food leads to multiple health issues like obesity, heart attack and diabetes.
That’s why it is refreshing Borgo Trattoria encourages and embraces traditional family values – sitting down together, sharing stories and savouring homemade meals. Everything from the bar in the middle where Italian wines are poured to the open kitchen in the back, Borgo is a hybrid of a traditional Italian kitchen while emanating a minimalist design with the white brick walls and charming light fixtures.
Food...
Try the infamous risotto balls with a blend of smoky cheese resulting in a savory appetizer. Other suggested starters include the balsamic marinated vegetables, deep-fried eggplant sticks and their newest addition, seared mortadella and taleggio cheese pocket with balsamic glaze. For the cold cut and cheese lovers, you can customize your own plate from a wide selection including prosciutto, mortadella, asiago and provolone.
The Orecchio D’Elefante – their all-star signature entree – consists of a 14oz tenderized and breaded veal chop, arugula salad with fresh plump golden tomatoes and crispy truffle-infused fries. This is the epitome of a class Italian family dish.
Their dessert sampler plate creates a closing experience akin to being in heaven. Try all four dishes: the blackberry jelly topped with basil and lemon cream, banana cake drizzled with hazelnut cream accompanied by coconut rum gelato, chocolate brownie with mango puree topped with mint crème fraiche and strawberry-balsamic mascarpone mousse.
Borgo also serves a magnificent brunch. The most popular dish is definitely the medium-rare steak, scrambled truffle eggs, crispy prosciutto with a side of luxurious green salad. Enjoy with coffee & Bailey’s or a glass of Prosecco.
Check out Borgo to relive those childhood memories of a traditional family meal. It truly doesn’t get much better than a home cooked meal and great company and conversation.
