Calgary Head Office Companies - Top Earners on the Financial Post's 500

If you are Canadian, chances are you know that Calgary is the epicentre of the oil patch. Found below the world’s third largest oil reserves, it’s no wonder why many oil and gas companies in Canada have chosen Calgary as the location for their head office. To much surprise, this isn’t the only industry choosing to do so. Also on the list is a booming airline, an emerging technological leader and a construction giant amongst others.

Although these companies have managed to become top earners in Canada, energy companies still dominate the top of the list and are a main driving force in propelling Calgary into a new and prosperous year in 2013. Nearly every Calgary based company listed as a top 50 earner in the Financial Post 500 are energy firms, save Agrium Inc., a chemical company known for fertilizer goods, and Viterra Inc., a company specializing in food processing.

Other non-energy notables in the top 500 include

  • Corus Entertainment
  • WestJet Airlines
  • Shaw Communications
  • UFA Co-operative
  • Central Fund of Canada
  • Calgary Co-operative Association
  • CE Franklin
  • Safeway Canada
  • Boardwalk Real Estate Investment Trust
  • SMART Technologies

As a result of continued international investment, Calgary is expanding its spectrum of industries. In 2011, the Bank of China opened their first office in the city, showing how much attention Calgary is receiving from the international community. It is no longer just an energy city, but a place for technological, financial and other investments as well.

As the economy slows in activity, it is anyone’s guess as to what will happen to the price of oil and gas in 2013, but one thing is for sure; Calgary will remain the focal point of the energy industry in Canada and will support the success of other non-industry businesses along the way.
