Over the past two decades, Calgary International Airport (YYC) has more than doubled in size and passenger volume. Now it is even bigger with the soon-to-be opening New International Airport Terminal!

To keep up with demand, the Calgary Airport Authority has taken on the $2 billion expansion program separated into two main projects.

The first – Runway Development Project – was a 14,000 ft. long, 200 ft. wide runway built with all the latest technologies which has been operational since June of 2014.

Now, the second project – the New International Terminal – completed back in 2015 has nearly opened its doors as Fall 2016 approaches. Here are some really cool facts on YYC’s New International Terminal, check them out:

YYC’s New Terminal…

• An additional 2 million square feet of space via the new terminal - equivalent to about 34 NFL football fields

• 24 new aircraft gates for aircraft with destinations in the United States and countless other countries around the world

• 50 new indoor dining and shopping retail spaces

• It is a green building with 660 kilometres of high efficiency, in-floor radiant heating tubes

• Approximately 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas will be saved annually from co-generation that will produce both electricity and heat

• About 500,000 litres of rainwater will be harvested annually for low-flow plumbing fixtures

• To date, more than 11 million hours of work have been performed by construction crews on the new terminal

• It would take nearly 8,600 truckloads of concrete to match the amount of such used to build the new terminal

• The amount of granite flooring installed inside the terminal is equivalent to the total square footage of 177 average-sized residential homes

• New Connections Corridor and introduction to the YYC LINK passenger shuttle compact transit system

• New Canada and United States customs facilities

• New Marriot Hotel with 300 total rooms
