Calgary is Home to Canada’s Tallest Stand-Alone Airport Traffic Control Tower!

Calgary Facts YYC Airport InfographicOn May 25th, 2013, Calgary became home to Canada’s tallest stand-alone airport traffic control tower!

Built by NAV CANADA, the 270 foot high control tower is an integral part of the new runway project at the Calgary International Airport. It took a year to build at a cost of $25 million.

The new tower is almost twice the size of Calgary’s existing airport control tower and is 80 feet taller than Canada’s next tallest stand-alone airport control tower located in Toronto, Ontario.

Believe it or not, there’s only one airport control tower in Canada taller than NAV CANADA’s latest project at the Calgary Airport!

But the Vancouver Harbour Control Tower in downtown Vancouver sits on top of a 29 storey skyscraper and is not a free-standing structure.

Calgary’s old control tower was shutdown at the end of June 2013.

Calgary International Airport Runway Expansion

I love Calgary YYCCalgary’s new airport runway project is estimated to cost $600 million. It will give the Calgary International Airport the capability to receive humanity's largest air jets with fewer payload limitations and is expected to open up new doors at the YYC Airport for international travel.

Part of the project is a new 14,000 foot long, 200 foot wide runway which will become Canada’s longest runway, beating out Calgary’s existing runway at 12,675 feet for the top spot. I guess there is no thunder stolen from our city there at least.

This is only 2000 feet short of being North America’s longest runway (16,000 feet) currently located at the Denver International Airport in Colorado.

One of the reasons why Calgary needs a longer runway is because at higher altitudes from sea level it takes longer for airplanes to take off, especially larger jets with larger weight.

The new expansion will also double the airport’s terminal space with 60 new services and shops as well as 22 new terminal gates.

I love CanadaExpansion into the Future…

Calgary’s massive airport expansion will provide our city with the means to cope with a rapidly growing population and city for years to come.

Calgary’s new expansion is expected to open in the fall of 2015.
