Cleaver Calgary Restaurant Review
A restaurant that goes by the name of Cleaver is bound to have a meaty menu selection. Well, that is exactly what the new Cleaver restaurant on 17th Avenue SW is all about.
Located just off of the corner of the Red Mile and 4th Street SW, Cleaver’s menu is packed with salivating meat entrees that are as good as they sound. Throw in its comfortable seats and trendy interior and you could have one of the next late night foodie hotspots in Calgary.

Atmosphere and Service
Inside of Cleaver you’ll find a minimalist industrial interior with high-end finishings and neat décor such as the cleavers bolted behind the glass in the entrance way. I also thought the adjustable lights over the tables were pretty cool adding flexibility to the restaurant space in their own sense.
The owners really did a good job choosing comfy seats all around. Notice the anchored bar stools that look like they would be a great seat for drinking, socializing and having some fun on a Friday or Saturday night.
On top of the well done interior, the service was as you would expect at any new Calgary restaurant looking to make an impression on customers – very good! Now let’s talk about the key ingredient of any restaurant.
Our Orders
Sandwich – steak, horseradish, arugula, Portobello, telaggio, baguette - $15.00
If you’re a steak and mushroom lover, then you’ll absolutely love this sandwich. The steak was grilled perfectly as you would expect from a meat specialty restaurant like Cleaver and had nearly no gristle at all.
Thick slices of cooked Portobello mushrooms almost melt in your mouth and add a whole new level of flavour and texture that make this sandwich a must try menu item. The baguette; a bit crunchy on the ends but soft enough to still be a delightful treat.
Sandwich – tuna, jalapeno, spinach, cheddar, lime, brown nuts - $16.00
Fish sandwiches don’t get any better than this. The shredded tuna was mixed in with a tasty blend of mayonnaise and some some other mystery ingredients that made it absolutely spectacular, not to mention the rest of the toppings packed onto this baby.
Even though it was a bit challenging stuffing that massive sandwich into my mouth, I still have to say it is a must try lunch entree - try it out!
Meat lovers beware… once you try a sandwich at Cleaver you may just find yourself going back for more again and again.
