On this very special evening, Ehnes will be accompanied by pianist Andrew Armstrong as the duet perform works from Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Brahms in Calgary’s newest theatre. See more at MRU’s Conservatory & Bella Concert Hall today.

" The New York Times reported that, “superb violinist Christian Tetzlaff pulled out of an important concert at Carnegie Hall.” It was for an arguably more important occasion as he flew home to Germany to welcome a new addition to his family. The remaining trio of Leif Ove Andsnes (piano), Tabea Zimmermann (viola) and Clemens Hagen (cello) were left without a premiere violinist to play Brahms’ three piano quartets on the famed stage. And here comes James Ehnes, a Canadian violinist to substitute.

Ehnes will be appearing at Mount Royal University’s Bella Concert Hall on Friday, May 13th, 2016, as a part of the Wyatt Concert Series. He describes his substitution as the “premiere violinist”. Anthony Tommasini, a reviwer for The Times Magazine, praises Ehnes contribution for stepping in, “…Ehnes’s velvety sound and sensitivity fit well with the vibrant playing of his colleagues on this night”. Without a doubt Ehnes’s substitution was much appreciated by both the audience and his collaborators on this night.I love Calgary

Now with a moment to rest, Ehnes has had some time to reflect on the shows of the quartet that include performances at Orchestra Hall (Chicago) and Chapel Hill (North Carolina). The violinist also is fully acknowledging his recent win at the Juno Awards for Classical Album of the Year which just happened to be announced right here in Calgary, Alberta. “We work so hard on these albums, it is nice to be recognized”, such a humble comment for an amazing violinist who has now 11 of these coveted prizes under his belt.

Cameras will be rolling on May 13th at the Bella Concert Hall as Ehnes and Armstrong take the stage. As their debut at the brand new venue, Ehnes is excited to be able to get a first-hand experience at the theatre of which he has heard so much about.
