5 Fun & Family-Oriented Activities at Mount Royal University
Mount Royal University may be Calgary’s second largest post-secondary institution, but by no means is it “second place” when it comes to the amount of activities and events it has year round.
Here are some of the fun things you can do at almost any day of the week and in any month at Mount Royal University…
Do Some Bouldering / Rock Climbing
Inside of MRU’s fitness facility you’ll find an awesome 40 foot rock climbing wall with about a dozen different faces of varying difficulties. Whether you are a beginner or somewhat skilled at climbing already, one of these walls is sure to test your skills. Quick facts:
- 32 person capacity
- affordable equipment rentals
- Lead climbing and top rope
- 3 auto-belay units
- separate bouldering room
MRU offers two rock climbing classes - one for beginners and one for those with some experience – which go great for those looking to learn the basics or to advance the knowledge they already have. Indoor private lessons are also available to those looking for a little more attention.
Because rock-climbing times vary from season to season, you’ll want to contact MRU’s fitness facility for more information on times, prices and courses if you wish.
Get Fit Like a Fiddle
MRU’s recreational facility has everything that you need to live an active and healthy lifestyle, including:
- 14,000 square foot fitness centre
- 5 lane, 200m indoor track with TRX and functional training areas
- 5 volleyball and basketball courts with public times
- Two fitness studios for yoga, spin and other classes of the sort
- Internet and HDTV compatible cardio machines
- Large change rooms with day-use lockers and steam rooms
One of the great things about MRU’s fitness facilities is that they allow you to work out and live an active lifestyle in maximum comfort.
There’s definitely No fussing around with old and broken fitness equipment or looking for a machine that isn’t there because this place has it all!
Play Some Squash
Why not skip the long and boring treadmill run and play a game of squash instead? Playing sports is a great way to burn that unwanted fat while exercising muscles that you wouldn’t normally on a treadmill.
MRU’s recreational facility has 6 international squash courts up for use and reservations for them can be made up to a week in advance. Equipment rentals for squash are also available at the front check-in desk.
Go Swimming in the Ocean
Mount Royal’s Aquatic Centre is a family-friendly swimming pool with regular public swim times, swimming lessons and other specialized classes for people of all ages.
The facility is home to an 8 lane, 25 metre salt water swimming pool for maximum float-ability and a hot tub, diving board and steam rooms inside the change rooms. For more information on water recreational opportunities at MRU, be sure to call in or check out the website as the pool schedule changes all the time.
Read & Be Entertained
Think of the new Bella Concert Hall as the “Jubilee Auditorium” of the southwest. This $90 million dollar project has just been recent completed and is opening its doors for the very first time with a celebratory high-profile fall arts festival in September of 2015.
This event will be the first of many incredible concerts, festivals and other arts and cultural events to be hosted by the state-of-the-art facility.
Another development to open soon at MRU is the brand new Riddell Library & Learning Centre, which will replace the older library and provide both students and the public with literature, technology, applications and much more.
Keep your eyes and ears open for the completion of this $85.5 million dollar project for some time in 2017.
