Pho Kim Calgary Restaurant Review

Is it just me, or do you also find yourself craving Vietnamese Pho at least three times a week? I sometimes think there is something wrong with me, but then and again, pho is quite healthy for you and easy on the pocketbook – so why not!

This time around, I visited Pho Kim just off of 16th Avenue and Centre Street N. This restaurant used to be an old favourite of mine and I was curious to see if it`s food was as good as I remember.

Atmosphere and Service

It was nice to see that Pho Kim did a full renovation inside and out since the last time I went several years ago. There’s just something about the white walls and boreal green that they had; these colours can make any restaurant feel old and outdated and possibly spark the curiosity of patrons as to how clean the entire establishment is (including the kitchen).

However, now Pho Kim is caught up with the modern times as they have a brand new colour palette, leather upholstery, and chairs.

The service was decent except for the fact that we ordered water and didn’t get any. But that’s okay because we had tea – definitely not the biggest of deals. Other than that the servers and cashier were all very friendly and tended to us just fine.

Our Orders

One of the nice things about Pho Kim is that they offer small, large, and extra-large sizes which all vary by about $0.60 in price. So depending on how hungry you are you can order a bowl that will suit your stomachs needs.

Pho Tai (small) - $7.90 – Rare-done beef strips rice vermicelli soup –This small bowl of Pho Tai had a decent amount of noodles in it for a small size and filled my smaller stomached lunch partner up just right. The soup wasn’t too salty or oily (two checkmarks) and would be something we would come back for again.

Pho Sate (extra-large) - $ 9.25 – at first, I was surprised at how much noodles they put in this bowl but then realized that it didn’t really matter because I was starving and could eat it all! One downside was that I would have liked to have seen more beef to match the overwhelming amount of rice vermicelli, but no big deal because I still got my money’s worth.

Once again, the sate soup wasn’t too hot or too mild and had a pleasant, non-salty / oily taste. If you like spicy you will like Pho Kim`s Sate Soup!

If you find yourself craving Vietnamese cuisine and are near Pho Kim, I would recommend stopping in and trying out their take on your favourite dish. Mine is the Pho Sate and they did a great job, so check this place out!
