Tango Tropical Grill Calgary Restaurant Review

A friend had mentioned that they wanted to check out Tango Tropical Grill a while back but we haven’t had the opportunity to do so together just yet. Fortunately, we were nearby after the gym and decided to go!

Upon an initial glance, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this restaurant. I thought it was a pub or grill but the bubble tea advertisement in the window clued me into the fact that Tango Tropical Grill is a Vietnamese and Thai fusion restaurant. This got me excited since I love Asian cuisine!

Atmosphere & Service

Once inside Tango Tropical Grill you are embraced by an open-concept, recently renovated interior consisting entirely of half and full booths. Tables are seated spaciously and the bathrooms are new and clean.

Our server did a good job of keeping our drinks topped off and asking us about what we wanted at the right time. The restaurant wasn’t that busy, but it was still nice to have good service despite how unchallenging it might have been for them to provide it to us.

Our Orders

Shrimp Salad Rolls (2 rolls) - $5.25 – rice vermicelli noodles, lettuce, carrot, sweet basil wrapped in rice paper with a side of sweet peanut sauce

Freshly made salad rolls are always a telltale sign of a good pho restaurant. Tango makes theirs to order, expressed by their fresh taste. The only downside was that you get only 2 rolls while at other pho restaurants you get 3 for around the same price.

Crispy Meat Spring Rolls (4 Rolls) - $6.50 – carrots, onion, garlic, taro, black pepper, deep friend and served with the house special fish sauce

Tango’s spring rolls were also made-to-order and come in three different versions: crispy shrimp, veggie and meat. The meat version had enough meat in it that it was noticeable every bite and gave these rolls a different taste than those at other pho restaurants which are almost always veggie only.

Beef Pho Sate Soup (XL) - $12.50 – rice vermicelli noodles, lean beef, onion in house special sate broth served with a side of fresh beansprouts, basil and lime

Another telltale sign of a good pho restaurant is how their beef sate stacks up against other places. Some questions I usually answer:

• Does the broth have a unique, flavourful taste?

• Do they skimp out on meat or other ingredients?

• Is there anything else about it that makes it stand out from other restaurants?

I absolutely loved Tango Tropical Grill’s take on beef pho sate. The broth’s flavour was an unique and enjoyable fusion of sweet Thai Tom Yum and spicy sate flavours, while the amount of lean beef and noodles was more than enough to fill even the hungriest of stomachs.

Final Verdict

Based on the fresh appetizers and amazing Vietnamese / Thai fusion broth + overall impression of the beef pho sate soup, we will be adding Tango Tropical Grill to our list of Best Vietnamese Pho Restaurants in Calgary.

In comparison, the food we ordered is a few bucks here and there more than at other pho restaurants but is well worth it if you like trying new places around Calgary.
