Migrants, Newborns and Alberta Population Growth

Map of CanadaAlberta is the fastest growing province in Canada! A consistently strong economy has consistently attracted tens of thousands from other provinces and countries of the world. But inbound migrants aren't the only ones driving Alberta`s rapid population growth, it`s the newborns as well!

According to Statistics Canada, from July 2011 to June 2012, Alberta experienced a 2.5 percent growth in its population. That`s approximately 25 new Albertans for every 1000 already existing. And 7.7 of those 25 people didn't come from outside of our province - they were born right here in Alberta!

Not only does Alberta have the highest population growth rates in Canada, it has the highest natural population growth rate as well! See more at Alberta and Interprovincial Migration today!

    Growth Across Alberta

One interesting fact found in these statistics is that natural growth isn’t even across the board. Different regions in Alberta have varying natural population growth rates. Here are some of those areas…

    • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake with 12.3 newborns per 1,000 people
    • Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River hovering at around 10 newborns per 1,000 people
    • Calgary with 8.5 newborns per 1,000 people
    • Red Deer almost the same as Alberta very close to 7.7 newborns per 1,000 people
    • Edmonton with 6.9 newborns per 1,000 people

    Young Populations, More Babies

A determining factor in natural population growth rates is the average age of a particular area. The younger the populace, the more likely there will be newborns, and lots of them!

This is partly why the Drumheller and Camrose region of Alberta showed the slowest amount of population growth by natural means because these communities have a higher average age.

    Calgary’s Population Growth

Calgary is currently experiencing one of its most rapid phases of population growth in two decades! A recent civic tally showed that between April of 2012 and April of 2013, the city grew by 29,327 new residents bringing its total population to 1,149,552!
