Top 5 Calgary Dog Parks You (and Your Pet) Will Love
Summer has finally arrived! Now we and our furry friends can enjoy those long, bright sunny day walks without layering up in winter gear.
A Great City for Dogs
Did you know that Calgary is home to over 700 kilometres of pathways and has the most off-leash land out of all major cities in North America?
Luckily for all of us and our pets, outdoor parks and interconnecting pathways can be found near any residential neighbourhood or condominium whether that be in downtown, the inner city or suburbia.
Even rural luxury neighbourhoods like Watermark Bearspaw have their own set of pathways that are great for taking man’s best friend on a much-deserved walk.
The next time you’re out and about with the dog, try taking them to one of these best Calgary dog parks and let us know what your favourite dog parks are – we will add them to the list!
Bowmont Park
- Northwest
- 164 hectares
- 85th Street and 48th Avenue NW
Located on a plateau above the Bow River Valley, Bowmont Park is a visually stunning off-leash area with fantastic views of the surrounding city and Rocky Mountains.
The plateau isn’t too steep either so there are no worries about throwing the ball over as your furry friend will be able to retrieve it no problem!
Apart from the spectacular views, Bowmont Park also connects to other parks along the Bow River just in case a long walk is on the agenda.
Nose Hill Park
- Northwest
- 1129 hectares
- 5620 14th Street NW
When it comes to the sheer size of this off-leash area, no park in Calgary beats that of Nose Hill Park.
A majority of Nose Hill Park’s 11 square kilometres is off-leash which makes it one of the best dog parks to visit any day of the week.
Just make sure you bring a windbreaker as this often barren park area can get quite windy even on a warm sunny day!
Sue Higgins Park
- Southeast
- 62 hectares
- Southland Drive and Deerfoot Trail SE
Formerly known as Southland Park, Sue Higgins Park is a riverside park with bustling pathways where your dog (and you) may just meet some new friends!
It is also home to Calgary’s largest fenced off-leash area – kind of like a massive social club for dogs.
Your furry friend will especially love the opportunity to jump in the water and cool down on a hot summer day.
River Park / Sandy Beach Parks
- Southwest
- 33 hectares + 21 hectares
- 4500 14A Street SW
These two beautiful parks make any dog walk an enjoyable experience.
Located in the southwest inner city, River Park / Sandy Beach Park are two riverside parks with a beautiful natural setting spanning along the embankments of the Elbow River.
There’s even a dog water-fountain in case your furry pal feels like a drink while away from the river.
To get to the off leash area you do have to go down a small narrow passageway, however, at the bottom is a large off-lease area for dogs and humans to enjoy.
Weaslehead Natural Area
- Rural southwest
- 237 hectares
- 66th Avenue and 37th Street SW
If you feel like escaping the city without heading to Bragg Creek, Kananaskis or the Rockies, Weaslehead Natural Area is the park for you!
Located west of the Glenmore Reservoir, Weaslehead is easily accessible via the reservoirs pathways for residents of nearby neighbourhoods such as Garrison Woods, Garrison Green and Lakeview.
Tall pine trees and thick shrubbery make you feel like you’re truly out in the wild but without being too far at all!
Keep in mind that although there may be lots of room for your dog to run around in, that the park is an on-leash park and you may be ticketed if your furry companion is off-leash.
