Do What the Locals Do – Episode 11 – Fort Calgary

Fort Calgary Barracks in CalgaryOn this episode of do what the locals do we will be exploring our roots at Fort Calgary.

Get ready to take a step backwards in time by visiting where it all started for our internationally acclaimed city at the Calgary landmark!

    Brief History of the Fort

Way back when, when cowboys and outlaws ruled the masses, whiskey traders were running northward from the United States into Canadian territory, selling mass quantities of alcohol to the local Indian tribes.

To prevent the whiskey traders from delivering their goods, the North West Mounted Police established a wooden outpost at the meeting place of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

Not only would the new police fort act to strengthen ties with the Indian tribes before more settlement occurred, it would maintain law and order as well.

As the years passed, the establishment was renamed as Calgary and has become Canada’s "Heart of the West" as we know it.

    Activities at Fort Calgary

Fort Calgary is a 40-acre area found immediately east of the downtown core. It is open year round and has a number of fun filled activities including school programs, tours and interactive exhibits.

For those who find themselves hungry when visiting the historical site, head over to The Deane House Restaurant for some locally influenced brunch and lunch meals. The Deane House Restaurant, Interpretive Centre and 1888 Barracks are all available to rent for private functions, such as weddings, parties and others of the sort.

If you are looking to learn more about how it all began, then head down to Fort Calgary for a guided tour and be sure to stop in at The Deane House Restaurant for some delicious food afterwards! I learned lots about our city I never knew before and was glad I participated.

For lunch I highly recommend the Captain’s Burger – Alberta Ground Chuck served with aged white cheddar, tomato jam, double smoked bacon and baby gem lettuce on a toasted Ciabatta. Absolutely scrumptious! And if you love sparkling water, wash it down with a San Pellegrino.
