Calgary’s Population Very Close to 1.2 Million by the End of 2014
The latest numbers from Calgary’s Civic Census are showing that the city’s population grew to just under 1.2 million by the end of 2014 – at 1,195,194 people.
According to the results, that’s an increase of 38,508 people over the previous year, roughly a 3.33 percent growth of population which is similar to levels reported back in 2010.
While a healthy birth versus death – contributing an approximate gain of 10,500 people in 2014 - does have its role to play, it is the net migration levels that have had the largest effect on the growth of the local population.
Nearly 28,000 more people decided to move to Calgary than had left between April of 2013 and April of 2014, resulting in a record breaking year for the city’s growth. Calgary is currently the fifth largest municipality in Canada.
Fastest Growing Communities in 2014
It should come as no surprise that some of Calgary’s newest (and most popular) suburban neighbourhoods have become home to many that have relocated to the city. Those that have grown their own populations by more than 1,000 people are:
- Saddleridge – 2,373 new members
- Auburn Bay – 2,242 new members
- Cranston – 1,858 new members
- Skyview Ranch – 1759 new members
- Evanston – 1,704 new members
- Panorama Hills – 1,384 new members
- Aspen Woods – 1,095 new members
- Beltline – 1,091 new members
With so many new members in the community, it should also come as no surprise that the total number of housing units increased in 2014 by 9,865 to a total of 478,223, just a small fraction over 2 percent growth year over year.
Meanwhile, the number of housing units available for occupancy decreased to 9,315 units compared to the 11,782 in 2013. Vacancy rates dropped to just 2.01 percent in 2014, making it tough for inbound migrants to find rental properties.
